One of my favourite stories about artificial intelligence does not involve a technology company, a research laboratory or a venture-backed start-up. It involves a farmer in Colombia.
A friend of mine works in agriculture and, until recently, had little interest in artificial intelligence. He was not a programmer, nor particularly interested in technology. In fact, he was probably one of the last people one would expect to be experimenting with AI. Yet one day, during a conversation about the subject, he asked a simple question:
"Can this actually help me?"
It is a question that appears repeatedly in discussions about artificial intelligence. Not because people are necessarily sceptical, but because they are trying to understand where all of this fits into their lives. Much of the public conversation around AI remains surprisingly detached from everyday experience. We hear about billion-dollar companies, advanced research laboratories, automated systems and technological disruption. Yet very few people wake up wondering how the latest model compares with its predecessor. Most people wake up wondering how to get through the day more efficiently.
That distinction matters. The adoption of new technologies has rarely been driven by fascination with the technology itself. People adopt tools because those tools help them do something they already wanted to do. The tractor succeeded because it made farming more productive. The spreadsheet succeeded because it made accounting easier. The underlying technology was almost secondary to the practical problem being solved.
Artificial intelligence is following a remarkably similar path.
In my friend's case, the starting point was not strategic planning or complex data analysis. It was paperwork. Like many business owners, he spent time organising receipts, tracking expenses and managing administrative tasks that consumed attention but generated little value. We spent some time exploring how AI could help simplify that work. The exercise was not especially technical. It required no programming, no advanced software knowledge and no specialist training. It was little more than a conversation about his work and a demonstration of what these systems could do.
The result was immediate. Tasks that had previously required time and concentration became substantially easier.
But that is not what struck me most.
What struck me was that my friend had adopted a powerful new technology without becoming more technical. He did not learn programming. He did not study machine learning. He did not spend months mastering software.
He simply described problems, asked questions and evaluated answers.
In other words, he interacted with AI using the same skills he had been using his entire life.
Once he realised that the technology could genuinely help him, something shifted. He began asking different questions. Could it help analyse crop plans? Could it help organise production records? Could it help compare planting strategies? Could it help identify patterns hidden within years of operational data?
Before long, he was no longer using AI merely to automate paperwork.
He was using AI as a thinking partner.
What fascinates me is that this transition did not occur because he gained technical expertise. It occurred because the technology became accessible through forms of interaction he already understood.
For most of the digital age, progress required humans to learn the language of machines. We learned software interfaces, commands, workflows and, in some cases, programming languages. Access to powerful digital tools often depended on technical literacy.
Artificial intelligence is beginning to reverse that relationship.
For the first time, one of the most sophisticated technologies ever created can be accessed through fundamentally human forms of communication. Conversation. Writing. Images. Questions. Ideas.
The interface is no longer primarily software. Increasingly, it is language.
My friend did not need to understand neural networks. He did not need to understand machine learning. He simply needed to describe a problem, ask a question and engage in a conversation.
That may prove more important than many of the technological breakthroughs themselves.
Technology has often advanced by becoming faster, cheaper or more powerful. AI is doing something different.
It is becoming more human.
Reading, writing, speaking, asking questions and interpreting images are not specialist skills. They are among the most fundamental forms of human interaction. For thousands of years, people have learned through conversation, stories, observation and dialogue. Artificial intelligence increasingly operates through those same mechanisms.
People are not adopting AI solely because it is powerful. They are adopting it because interacting with it feels natural.
This helps explain why adoption often starts in surprisingly mundane places. People rarely begin with grand ambitions of transforming their lives through artificial intelligence. More often, they begin with a small frustration. A repetitive task. A bottleneck. A process that consumes more time than it should.
Once that problem is solved, curiosity tends to take over.
The pattern repeats itself across professions. I have seen it with artists exploring visual concepts, entrepreneurs testing business ideas, students challenging assumptions and small business owners managing increasingly complex operations.
What starts as automation often becomes exploration.
That is where the discussion becomes particularly interesting. Most commentary about artificial intelligence focuses on what machines can do. The more consequential question may be what people can do once some of the traditional barriers to action begin to disappear.
Throughout history, ideas have been abundant. Execution has been scarce. Turning an idea into reality has generally required expertise, capital, networks, time and often a considerable degree of luck. What AI appears to be doing is compressing part of that distance. It is not eliminating the need for judgment, creativity or expertise, but it is reducing some of the friction that traditionally separated imagination from execution.
For those of us interested in creativity, that shift is difficult to ignore. Whether we are discussing a work of art, a farming operation, a business plan or a scientific hypothesis, the challenge is fundamentally the same. An abstract idea must somehow become something tangible.
AI is increasingly helping people move from thought to action, from possibility to experimentation and from imagination to execution.
That is why I believe the most important AI stories of the coming decade may not emerge from technology conferences or research laboratories. They may emerge from farms, workshops, studios, classrooms and small businesses—places where people are simply trying to solve real problems.
My friend never became a technology expert.
He did not need to.
What changed was not the farm. What changed was his perspective.
And perhaps that is the real story of artificial intelligence.
A farmer in Colombia adopted AI not because he learned to think like a machine, but because machines are increasingly learning to communicate in ways that humans already understand.
The technology itself is impressive. What people choose to do with it may prove far more consequential.
